Blackjack is a card game against the dealer. Your aim is a hand closer to 21 than the dealer’s, without going over.
What makes Blackjack different
Blackjack has a few rules that strategy charts agree on almost everywhere: always split aces and eights, never split tens or fives, and stand on a hard 17 or more. Following just these already beats playing on gut feeling.
Insurance looks tempting when the dealer shows an ace, but over time it costs more than it saves. Most experienced players simply say no.
How to play Blackjack
- Place your bet; you and the dealer each get two cards.
- Number cards count at face value, picture cards 10, aces 1 or 11.
- Hit to take a card, stand to keep your total, or double for one more card at twice the bet.
- Check the table rules for when the dealer must draw or stand.
Tips before you play
A basic strategy chart shows the mathematically best move for every hand. It lowers the house edge but never removes it.

Frequently asked questions
Should I take insurance?
Usually not. Insurance is a side bet that the dealer has blackjack, and over many hands it loses more than it wins.
When should I double down?
A common rule is to double on 11, and on 10 when the dealer shows 9 or lower.
